Strong influence of small volume change on superelastic deformation of high-temperature shape memory alloys

It is shown that the small volume changes caused by different factors (as small particles and crystal defects introduced into the crystal lattice by thermomechanical treatment of test specimen) can drastically change the superelastic deformation of the shape memory alloy. The deformational behaviour of Co-Ni-Ga and high-temperature Ni-Mn-Ga alloys subjected to different modes of preliminary treatment was studied experimentally. The strong influence of thermomechanical treatment on the stress–strain loops obtained at elevated temperatures was explained theoretically in terms of Landau theory of phase transitions by taking into account the volume change coupled with martensitic transformation strain.
